  • A bit spicy aromas with eucalyptus/pine, menthol, caramel and liquorice. Soft, rich and a bit jammy on the palate. Warmer and a lot richer than a 2008 tasted same evening.

  • Dinner at Summer Pavilion (Summer Pavilion, Ritz Carlton, Singapore): Very nice indeed. This had a lovely nose, as much Chambolle as Morey to my mind, with notes of violets floating around a core of black cherry and sweet blueberry pie aromas, these lined with a nice touch of ferrous mineral and a little earthy spiciness. Lovely on the palate too. Soft and velvety, yet with a good sense of depth and power to it, this filled the mouth with gentle waves of red cherries and darker blueberries, this time with more assertive notes of spice and earth trailing away into a subtly muscular finish. The wine really surprised me there - with a real reservoir of power and depth that belied its more elegant, flowery character. I liked the structure here too, with velvety tannins and a very decent bit of acidity for a 2009. A true Grand Cru then, with a lovely fullness and persistence to it, but also a deceptively easygoing charm and elegance that made it so easy to drink. Lovely stuff, drinking well now, but with a nice long life ahead of it yet.

  • The perfumed nose on Berthau's 2009 Bonnes Mares is all finesse with candied black fruit, violet, sous bois, and cedar. A wine of surprising elegance given the vineyard and vintage, with fine tannins and balanced acidity supporting mineral-laden dark fruited flavors. A tad more polished and oaked than my preference but this is quite good.

  • The epitome of burgundy appeal on the funky bouquet ... 100 meters below which lies a deep darkfruit sweetness comprised of night-picked berries, spiked stalks, and cold cream. And on further examination those two planes become three then five. The palate also acts on two parallel planes — high toned funky and richer dark, luxurious fruit, connected by a graceful, lush band of radiant freshness and spice. Remarkable texture. Epic wine. Delicious and refined with room to improve drink according to taste now-2029.

  • Very expressive nose with some development. Menthol, sweet liquorice spice. Gently oaky. Mineral and beginning forest floor. Wild raspberries. Fresh and chalky. Perfume. Most appealing.
Medium-fullish body. Rounded, smooth tannins. Rich and generous. Balanced and long. Cinnamon, raspberries, spice, herbs and menthol. Very elegant. Very Chambolle. Not a dense, wild and rough representation of Bonnes Mares. Clearly GC-level. 3-5 more years will give more forest floor, but this is definitely approachable.
