  • While I was delighted to stumble on to a hitherto-unknown (to me) producer of Petits Monts, one of my favorite 1er crus, I'm afraid this bottling doesn't show much if any of the site's breed. Part of that may be attributable to the oak, which is giving the wine a strong cedary taste and smell, but it's hard to put one's finger on what would be left if the oak were to recede. For example, I found the lightweight fruit profile attractive at first but it eventually became apparent, when it failed to show much beyond the superficial, that the mouthfeel was more the result of a sparsity of material than any real refinement of it. Combined with a strong sense of juiciness, it seemed a wine I would be more likely to finger as a minor appellation or basic Bourgogne than an elite Vosne 1er cru. Airtime doesn't do it any favors, either, as it picks up unappetizingly sweet sucking-candy flavors, which usually come packaged with New World wines with much fatter bodies than this one, but unfortunately the fact that it's on a leaner frame doesn't make it any more appealing.
