A purchase from the hedonistic Sams days; it has sat in the cellar a long time - beyond what the recommended drinking window is for what that is worth.
Still, it seemed lush and smooth and quite intact for all those years; I detected the silkiness of the syrah more evident than the expected cherry notes of the grenache. Not particularly complicated, subdued meaty, gamey notes.

Pop & pour. Very peppery, with earthy red fruit that is very new-world in style. Finish has some nice pepper as well. Not as sweet on the palate as the 2003, but very tasty and enjoyable. Drinking at peak.

Earth, game, dried fruit and toasted vanilla oak meet sweet spiced plums. Better balanced than the previous vintage with added acidity and a soft finish. Peaking, drink now.

Pepper notes consistent with previous bottle. This bottle had very little fruit compared to the previous bottle and other Owen Roe syrahs I've had. I suspect a slightly corked wine, but it's possible that this is closing down or just getting old.

Very good. Well balanced fruit with plenty of acid. Color was beautiful.
