Garagiste

(DOLCETTO Socre) Socré Blue Dear Friends, I admit it - I'm smitten. I apologize for the pathetic title of this offer but it is an apt description of this neon blue/purple wine that is so dense and full of lip-smacking fruit, it makes this classicist giggle with an Augustus Gloop-like delight. Instead of slathering you with my own babble, let’s allow this tank-aged delight to beckon you with its pure grape must and dark-fruit mineral wash instead. Basically, this is a wine to bring out when you have a table full of thirsty guests that are split down the middle – you look to one side and see those that adore extract and fruit – you look to the other and see a gaggle of wine geeks asking for a mineral concoction from the Cote Roannaise. The Socré Dolcetto delivers something to both parties and it acts like the Untied Nations of wine, bringing us all together – no translators or headsets needed. This artisan Dolcetto is the product of an amazing growing season at Socré for the varietal. The grapes were bursting at the time of harvest but not with sugar (as in 2003) but with a tannic mass akin to Cabernet. From an early point in the growing season, Socré knew this was going to be a superior year for the grape they just didn’t know how good until the wine was bottled. Hardly distributed in Europe (I don’t believe any has ever come to the US), the winery focuses on their Barbaresco bottlings and treats their Dolcetto more as a home project or hobby wine. Subsequently, they keep most of the Dolcetto for their own use (which is all the evidence we need – a winery can choose any of their wares to keep as a home beverage and they usually choose the best). With that in mind, I was able to cajole a small amount (very small) destined for local restaurants in Piedmont so please be patient with Niki. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for pure fruit/mineral density and low alcohol without any tricks or gimmicks. Those of you that enjoy dense old-world Syrah or even some of the thicker Left Bank Bordeaux should give this bargain treat a try. This parcel is directly from the winery cellar with perfect provenance.
