  • Interesting stuff, this. It's very high quality, though not entirely my cup of tea. It was a bit Loire chenin like. Pale gold. White flowers and meadows on the nose. The palate was fruity yet dryish. Fresh acidity still. Some nuttiness, honey, and herby quality. A good length too. No hurry to drink. (13% abv).

  • An International Challenge: Languedoc vs. South Africa (World Service Restaurant, Nottingham): 13%; a blend of chardonnay; roussane ane viognier.
A mid to deep lemon gold. Curious nose: very rich, with sweet and very concentrated fruit with some oak. Very ripe on the attack, but also curiously unbalanced. Really rather scented too. Very concentrated fruit on the palate. Very Good+?

  • The Domaine La Combe Blanche is owned by Guy Vanlancker, a Belgian and former schoolteacher, and is based in the village of La Livinière and has some of the best vineyard sites in the surrounding hills. There are currently around 20 hectares under vines, and yields are kept low at around 30 hl/ha (compared to the Languedoc average of 50-60 hl/ha). This wine is a blend of Chardonnary, viognier and roussanne: these are not permitted in AC La Livinière by appellation contrôlée rules, so this can only be labelled as a Vin de Pays.
An even, mid gold. Very rich nose, with some late harvest sweetness: reminds me a bit of Condrieu on the nose, but a late-harvest chardonnay note is also detectable. Very ripe on the palate with a touch of oxidation - but in a nice way. Very round and very smooth with a nice balance. Concentrated fruit, though it hollows out a bit on the middle. Very even throughout on the palate, with interesting flavours and a nice depth, but it doesn't really seem to develop at all in the mouth. Enormous length. Something of a curiosity, yet still Very Good Indeed.
