This was surprizingly youthful - fresh and bright, bursting with rhubarb. Not the flabby, over-the-hill, fading fruit disappointment I expected, due to some online reviews I read (maybe I lucked out on bottle variation). Other than the prominence of tartrate crystals, I would have guessed this was a current release. Huge constrast to the '03 tasted alongside!

Sweet tasting on first opening. Evolved a bit over an hour or two. Still plenty of nice fruit. Clearly not the heavily extracted LWC's we've come to love in the 02 and 03 vintages.

The color is a translucent garnet with the first hints of orange appearing toward the edges. On the nose there is a fresh but primarily earthy bouquet at first although much of the earthiness blows off as the wine aerates. On the palate there are fully resolved tannins, a fair amount of remaining acidity and some traces of fruit left with hints of cherry. It does not have the intensity and body of the 2001s and 2002s. As time went by some pepper appeared on the palate. At the beginning of the glass the finish was nice, again with remaining hints of cherry. As the glass reached the bottom, however, some of the white sediment reached the finish leaving a chalky bitter taste. This leads me to recommend sitting the bottle up for some time before pouring and perhaps decanting for sediment. My assessment is that this is a mature Pinot drinking nicely but somewhat past its peak and I definitely recommend drinking these up in the very near future. The good news is that if this is any indication we can expect Brian’s wines to age gracefully and with the additional extraction of newer vintages we’ll probably see a bit longer life.
