Somewhat pale, mostly mahogany albeit with a more reddish tinge to the core. The nose echoing the impression of a wine most definitely on the downslope, with mushroom, truffle, coffee & orange vying with more youthful sweet florals.
The palate has bright but non-aggressive acidity, with a touch of mintiness joining the orange and mushroom. Not unpleasant, but confirmed a fair way down the other side of the hill.

A long Sunday lunch on the Langhe: Our Cavallotto had a pale, evolved colour. A tertiary nose of old leaves on the ground, fungus, old leather couch and dried Porcini, with a whiff of sherry. Too old for many of our Italian friends to enjoy, but I did, preferring it to the younger seeming Gigi Rosso. In the mouth, dried fruit, tobacco leaf and earth, showing oxidation. I thought that the fruit was alive on the palate. Jeffrey picked the vintage as "1971 or 1974", thinking the wine a product of a good, ripe vintage.

Still has a decade or more ahead of it. A touch higher in alcohol than I prefer, but not dominant. Long finish. Typical cherry. Nice nose.
