  • Retail $60 (+). 80% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay. I bought three bottles of this wine several years ago while visiting the winery, and this is the last of the trio. The cork eased out without much more than a sigh and the wine was shockingly dark in the glass (more "golden" than "dark" but you get what I mean). Yeasty and, yes, oxidized, but oh so delicious with lemon curd fruit, baked bread, a nuttiness, and a yeasty component. Did I mention there was also quite a bit of yeast? Sure, the sparkle has faded (yet still there), but this is a rather amazing bottle of wine. Whoa.

  • Retail $60 (+). 80% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay. The last time I was in Champagne, I went to my favorite Grand Cru town, Bouzy (although Mailly is starting to come close). While Aÿ and Ambonnay are perhaps better known, a mere handful of kilometers away, Bouzy always beckons me. As far as I know, there is no restaurant, no little market, and really nothing of interest. Unless you happen to live for champagne. There are close to a dozen producers in town, most of them falling into the “Grower Champagne” camp and all of them feature the lovely Pinot Noir grown within the confines of the town. A quick perusal of the Paul Clouet website revealed that the house has changed its offerings, and this Brut is no longer made, apparently. And that is a shame since it is incredible. On the golden side of color with an incredibly rich nose of peach, pear, a touch of lemon curd, and an enchanting slightly oxidized, yeasty, fresh-out-of-the-oven croissant aspect that I could just sniff all day long. Of course, my wife would shoot me if I poured a glass of this wine and just *sniffed* it. And her scorn/violence would be merited—on the palate this is phenomenal: rich, fruity, layered, tart. Simply incredible. Why do I need to get back to Champagne? Exhibit A through at least 12.

  • Apple, slight citrus, nice yeast/ brioche, slight oxidative, floral, good acidity. Lingering finish. Really enjoyable.

  • Pretty yellow, peach, marzipan, white flowers on the nose. Crisp pear, apple s as nd lemon we it’s brioche on the finish. Good bubbles. Went well with Indian. Lovely by itself.
