2000 was not a great year in Napa, but good dark ruby color, still youthful, but medium weight, currants, hints of chocolate, cedar, graphite, little short on the finish, no Brett that overpowered the 2000 Howell Mountain

Probably a little past its prime but good fruit notes. Cork had broken down and there was a fair amount of sediment in the bottle. Finish was very smooth, very elegant cab with full body and a hint of spice.

We opened this wine to have for our New Year’s Eve dinner. I’d read the reviews here and was a bit concerned about what to expect (to the point of having a backup wine just in case). What a wonderful surprise. The cork was in superb shape and the nose jumped out of the bottle as soon as opened: dark berries, tar, a little tobacco, a bit of spices. The wine had almost no amber at the edges and remained dark dark purple. We decanted for about an hour before drinking and that was a good idea as the wine had thrown off a lot of sediment (despite that, the wine remained very dark like a young Cabernet). In the mouth, the wine was medium to full bodied, very smooth, creamy and intense with tons of blackberries, cassis, mixed in spices, nutmeg, tar and very slight tobacco and bell pepper notes. There was a little zing on the tongue (a bit like a great pichon lalande). The finish went on for 30-45 seconds but was a bit shorter than I would have expected given all that was going on in the mouth (and kept my score below 95). It was fully mature but really didn’t taste like a 20-year-old wine. What a great bottle.
