  • Some smoked meat and plenty of earth on the nose. It is just taking on some decaying leaf development. The cherry fruit has a medicinal quality, in a nice way. There are florals and the palate is relatively lean without a huge amount of mid-palate flesh. It is quite a pleasant drink and in a good place right now.

  • The nose was quite closed upon drinking even though upon pouring into the decanter it smelled better. I thought it smelled more of a Coonawarra Cabernet with vanilla and subtle menthol. The palate was earthy and savoury with red berries; it was medium bodied at best, flat and lifeless and a medium length. It was the most Un-burgundy-like wine ever. Disappointing.

  • A brilliant expression of this varietal, the 2007 Clos du Fonteny which is a monopole vineyard for Bruno Clair exhibits a lovely Pinot perfume in the elegant way only Pinots from Burgundy can reveal - with a few exceptions. The nose is just lovely with a rich sense of wet forest floor, damp earth and touch of spice and saddle leather. The palate adds to the overall experience and provides a perfect balance and integration of its various components. But this is a rather powerful wine - there are plenty of other efforts to taste for those seeking acidity and super finesse... Complexity is already starting to increase and will just keep developing as time goes by. (score is 93-94)

  • Structured but sensationally elegant. It took a long time to unwind and let the fruit show through but when it did everything was correct. Acid, fruit, tannin all forming a very firm framework that has ages of potential. Lean, direct and focused presentation of the wine is in line with the vintage which only benefits the example of this fruit. Wine making here is exemplary. Ripe but not over mature. Extracted but not to the point tannins are obtrusive. Finally, would I order this in a restaurant? Probably not. Not for another year or two. I would consume another bottle at home happily but with sufficient time to let it open. Is it worth the $70 a bottle that it will probably set you back? Today, no. In two years, yes. This will round out to be such a sensational wine that is really extraordinary for Gevrey. Buy a bottle, set on it until Christmas 2012 and it will taste like a million bucks.

  • Burgundy visit, Côte de Nuits, May 2009; 5/11/2009-5/13/2009 (Burgundy, France): Tasted at Domaine with winemaker Philippe Brun who finds '07s a good, silky, easy-drinking (drink sooner rather than later) vintage -- Showing wonderful exotic spice and fruit, with licorice, dusty chocolatey clove and black olive. Almost a touch of that "valve grease" I get in older German Rieslings. Interesting.
