Color of burnt butter and dark brown leather. A tiny bit oxidized with orange peel reduction, cinnamon powder, dried dates and road tar. Slightly higher than expected in acid level (similar to Oloroso) and a 30 - 45 second finish. $48 for a 1.5 once pour at Bern's Steakhouse in Tampa, FL., and it was worth every penny.

I believe this is the 1894 Founders Solera and not a vintage madeira. Translucent dark amber. Aromas of meyer lemon, orance, nuts, marmalade, and a hint of banana. Fresh oranges and marmalade on the palate, with nutty oxidation and spices. Excellent acids on an elegant frame. Closer in sweetness to a bual than a malmsey. Not the most complex of madeiras but well made and very enjoyable.

[Redacted]; 7/10/2015-7/11/2015: Extremely dark coloured -- almost opaque. Caramel and cooked citrus, this seemed very ripe and full-bodied for a malmsey. Not the most complex or distinctive, this was clearly well-made and had the benefit of a fair bit of age to give it loads of concentration and power (and although I might be wrong, I think this one is actually a solera and not a vintage madeira).

The oldest wine I've ever tasted. Lots of baking spice and vanilla and mocha, but with wonderful acidity to balance the sweetness. A treat.
