The nose is straight up California Syrah. Black fruit, tar, sweet licorice. The palate is so…refined. This is the modern style done right. This is better than any CA modern Syrah that I can think of. All of those intense flavors, but lifted, and balanced. Lato’s wines are just so impressive — they manage to be both modern and personal at the same time.

Decanted for an hour. Large. Became brighter over 3 hours. Nice. Drink other by 2020 sounds good- could go longer, but could lose some of its greatness.

Syrah from Afar with a Champagne Flight to start (Long Island, NY): 10/12 syrahs tasted single blind. Nose has lots of red and black fruit with some meatiness. The color is dark red leaning to purple. On the palate gobs of ripe red raspberry and blackberry with some spiciness - fruit is very primary here without a lot of secondary characteristics coming through. Seems new world and on the very young (actually I thought this was drinking much younger than an '09). Suspect this will continue to improve with more cellar time - revisit in 2025.

An Afternoon in LI w/Friends (Champagne Reception, Syrah from Afar) (Long Island): Young and very new world. There's almost a sweetness to this wine. Some cinnamon notes. Towards the end of the day of drinking and in a very tough line-up.
