We had to chase those In ‘n Outs with something after the corked Trot, and my Ovid was as good a candidate as any. I’ve written so much on this bottling, including this vintage, that I must be coming up against some sort of word limit, so I’ll just say that, 1) unlike the last bottle, this definitely benefited from air, coming out surprisingly hot and full, with most of that blowing off in the first 30-45 minutes, but this kept improving right up until the last glass on night #2. This seems to have all the right parts left, and if anything, tastes like it’s earlier rather than later in its drinking window, and 2) I’ve been an evangelist for this cuvee since I had my first bottle, a ‘12, a little over 4 years ago (I brought it to dinner at Aziza with WBW and csimm). I’ve believed since that, even at its relatively reasonable (although, alas, significantly increased) price tag, it hangs well with the best of the Valley, and having this in the midst of a trip that included Bella Oaks, Bond, VV, Harlan, VHR and Abreu, this more than held its own, and was, for me, right there for third best bottle of red (the Morlet CdC, as the sole white, stands separately) after the ‘21 Bella Oaks and the ‘19 Harlan, +/- the equal of the ‘17 BO, the ‘15 Bond Quella, the ‘21 VHR and the ‘19 Keplinger VHR. Delighted to share this with the generous MN, whom I don’t believe had this before (I think WBW’s only bottle was that ‘12). Delighted to have 3 more of these left and a good sampling from other vintages. If scoring, 94-95 off the pour, 96-97 end of night 1, 97-98+ end of night 2.

First of 2 ($180@) from a recent purchase (then, less than 2 weeks after, I got 3 at an auction for $25@ less, so popping one stat became imperative). Pretty much an all around Ibid from my note of just over 3 years ago, continuing to be bang on in its tasting window. I write briefly in the context of having had a ‘05, ‘06 and another ‘12 in the past several months and the more recent TNs. Unlike others, I found this quite fine off the pour, although it did deepen and smooth even more, and that the last glass on night #2 was incrementally best indicates a bright future for years to come. Equally fabulous as a cocktail wine and with food, spaghetti and meatballs one night, pork tenderloin another. For me, this was clearly a step+ above the ‘05 and ‘06, excellent wines in their own rights, with superior balance and depth, but it didn’t have quite the energy and nerviness of the ‘12, a truly transcendent wine for me, which hangs right there with the best of a remarkable group of CSs and BDX LB blends I’ve been lucky to drink over the past few years from Harlan, Abreu, MacDonald, Latour, Lafleur and Colgin, among others, all at higher price points. While I don’t expect this will improve from here in a meaningful way, it should hold for years, providing exceptional drinking, and I’m extending my drinking window, something I haven’t been doing much lately with repeat bottles, by 2 years. Score of the prior bottle, 97-98, still feels about right. Stunning stuff.
My clear cut choice as WOTN in a stacked lineup. The nose was deep and inviting, with a full broad pop of ripe fruit and subtle warm spices. The finish was long and left me reaching for just a small taste more!

Precocious and delicious. Highly recommended with a 3-4 hour cool decant.

Wine wasn’t in a good place as it was carrying too much fruit and jam on the tongue. Had a beautiful nose but the balance wasn’t there.
