  • Also popped and poured from a bottle I've had standing up in the cellar for a few weeks - my next to last bottle from a case bought on release.

You know, if I had poured these two wines single blind, I would have identified the '99 Moccagatta, with it's overripe nose, as the '90 Scavino. Side-by-side, you would never know this wine is nine years older. This is gorgeous today, expansive on the palate with good acidity, tar notes on the nose, and pretty much all I could ask for in a 30 year old Barolo.

  • A wine from my oldest daughter's birth year.

Tar and a dash of funk on the nose. This nose is definitely not about the fruit at 30 years of age.

Seamless on the palate, with black & red fruit; quite expansive. Decent acidity and nicely balanced. I don't see any more potential for favorable development at this point, so if you have this in the cellar, pull a cork on a bottle to check in - I will be making sure that my remaining stash is disposed of near-term. That said, I don't want to give the impression that I think this is in danger of falling off a cliff.

  • A light translucent ruby in the glass, with red fruits and an attractive spice note on the nose.

Lighter-bodied, with decent acidity. Nice persistence. Purchased on release, this has always been a nice wine from this vintage, and as we approach 30 years, it is still hanging in there, but certainly a wine for near-term consumption.

  • 1990 Barolo and Barbaresco Retrospective II (The North End Grill): Upon serving, the ‘90 Rocche dell’Annunziata was much warmer (temperature-wise) than the Bric del Fiasc, which hurt its initial performance, but as the evening wore on, I was able to taste it again on its own with much better results. The nose was hauntingly dark and intense with baked cherries, exotic spice, marine-minerality and hints of sweet herbs. On the palate, I found medium-bodied textures yet still lighter than I expected, with dried black cherry and strawberry fruits. Hints of tobacco, sweet herbs and inner florals lingered on the palate long into the finish, with an earthy-mineral tinge.

  • Paolo Scavino Wines (La Pizza Fresca Ristorante): Remarkably fresh wine that is just getting ready to drink. Vibrant red fruit, orange, spice, acidity on the palate. Pine aromatics are peaking out as well. The finish is little flat. Full bodied, fruit forward and complex. Drink now.
