Concentrated neon-yellow color. Sweet yet cool nose with understated sense of concentration and open, fine-tuned aromas of honey, lemon marmalade, some poached pear, a little bit of white peach, light creamy tones of a mature Riesling, a floral hint of apple blossom and a lifted herbal touch of mint. The wine is moderately full-bodied, very ripe and slightly on the voluptuous side with medium-sweet flavors of juicy red apples and apple sauce, some lemon marmalade, a little bit of stony minerality and steely character, light reductive notes of flint smoke, developed hints of beeswax and creaminess and a cooling touch of minty herbal character. The rather high acidity keeps the wine nicely in balance and makes the wine feel moderately structured, although the wine is certainly lacking the zip and verve of the cooler vintages. The finish is silky smooth, quite long and moderately concentrated with rather sweet flavors of lemon marmalade, some dried pineapple, a little bit of spicy minerality, light honeyed tones, a hint of apple sauce and a developed touch of cooked cream.

A tasty, harmonious and enjoyably rich Spätlese that certainly shows the solar qualities of the 2003 vintage, but retains still nice balance with its moderately high acidity. Sure, the wine is a bit voluptuous for a Mosel Riesling, but it fortunately doesn't taste one bit dull or blowzy. There's some developed character to it, but overall the wine is relatively youthful for its age and still certainly on an upward trajectory. Probably needs another 5-10 years before hitting its plateau of maturity; will keep good for at least a few decades. Delicious stuff.
