Delicioso. Un lujo.

  • Golden color. Thick honey on the nose. Light honey in the mouth. Full mouth feel. Good acidity with full fruit of pear and a hit of banana. Long finish. Still young this has years left on it. Lovely drink.

  • Delightfully tropical and exotic, yet comes across less sweet and lavish than I would have expected. Excellent acidity to balance its sugar, and an undercurrent of savory mushroomy notes from botrytis. Paired well with a squab course.

  • Prior bottle was almost two years ago and this wine remains in a great spot. Pineapple, peach, honey and citrus notes on the nose. Nearly full bodied with yellow peach and white pear upfront, moving to golden peach and a mix of tropical notes through the middle including pineapple and mango. Has richness and density through the mid-body with just a lit overlay of honey. Most of the perceived sweetness comes from the richness and depth of the tropical notes. These all remain well balanced by the acidity and tart citrus qualities on the backside and through the finish. Based on how well both the acidity and the fruit have held up, this wine clearly has many years in front of it at a high level.

  • Glass: Zalto Universa
Popped and poured, drunk over multiple days.
    Clear, deep, glowing golden-amber color.
Clean, medium+ intense, developing and beautiful nose. Ripe yellow stone fruit (apricot, vineyard peach), fine vanilla, caramel, herbs, delicate petrol and fine botrytis notes. All underpinned with a lovely mineral core and a wonderful freshness.
The sweetness is beautifully balanced by the vintage typical high, racy, but ripe acidity. 9,5% abv. Medium body. The party really kicks off on the palate! Fine warm fruit (apricot, peach), fine vanilla, honey, spices, herbs. Very dense and deep. Great tension and lots of pressure! Beautiful balance. Creamy, almost oily texture. This is certainly close to a “gold capsule” Auslese, but still has the lightweight and airy impression of a Spätlese. Very long finish with lots of ripe fruit, herbs and crushed stones. Wonderful. Drinks nicely now, but will continue to improve for at leas another decade. 94+

(Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese*) ($33.00) Might as well go for it. This is the rich-bitch of the Späts, actually a very strong Auslese or meager BA – 120° – with almost a gelee of botrytis; yet it’s not massively sweet, just lavish and extravagant.
