Funny how my taste can change. This wine still exhibits everything I enjoyed about it a few years ago. But now that California-like spice strikes me more like cinnamon cola syrup and a couple glasses surfeit. How do you rate a wine that tastes good for 1 glass only?

WOW! Everything about this wine is awesome. A beautiful ruby color. An abundant nose of ripe cherry, spice, and well-integrated oak - smells like it's from California! A ripe red-fruited attack that transitions effortlessly into the mid-palate, and a long spicy, complex finish punctuated by tannins gently nipping.

German Oddballs (with a Riesling or two for good measure) (SF Wine Trading Company): Medium ruby. Black cherry and wood smoke. Surprising volume and depth of fruit that is strongly framed by high char oak. As much as I usually hate this style of vinification, it somehow worked here. Can't say I've ever had a red German Meunier before!

(Darting Pinot Meunier) ($22.00) Is this Helmut’s best-ever red? It’s the best I’ve tasted, at any rate. Wonderfully rich and with ripe physio-sweetness, cherry and blackberry and cherry-wood smoke and cherry tobacco. A delight in its sheer beaming directness, though it’s far from simple and also shows some length, leading to a casky-smoky finish.

What Would You Drink - Sommelier's Favorites (Pappas Bros.): Cherry and earth on the nose, width spice and floral notes. Cherry and spice on the palate, with forest floor on the mid-palate, and a good floral finish.
