Brothers Marcos and Miguel Eguren must have sat down and wondered how they could repeat the success of Numanthia-Termes, after they sold the estate to LVMH. They founded Teso La Monja in 2007.
Proprietary vineyards situated in Valmediano, La Jara and Marinacea. 11.5 Hcts. Head-trained in goblet. Average age: more than one hundred years old. Altitude: 800 - 900 m. De-stemmed by hand with rigorous selection of every grape, berry per berry. Fermented in open wooden vats. Traditional foot press with light pump-overs. Malolactic in new French oak. The wine is submitted to an ageing of 18 months in new Bordelaise barrel of French oak. Decanted and showing moderate sediment.
Richly scented with opulent notes of high-end leather that are infused with notes of licorice, soy sauce, balsamic, porcini, earth sous bois, tobacco and coffee set against notes of fig, plum, prune juice, baking chocolate, dried florals, violet pastilles and hints of spice cake with subtle vanilla bean. The palate is rich and opulent with suave textured details and fine suede like tannins that comes with balanced acidity. Flavors show what Toro is best at; the balance of umami and fruit. Notes coat the palate in melted black licorice, leather, coffee, tobacco, sage, dried violet, earth, bitter chocolate, vanilla extract, plum, prune, fig, spice cake and mushroom with soy sauce and balsamic nuances. The long finish gains in intensity as it plays out.

Very deep, rich and concentrated, but without being fruit forward at all. It's all about texture with this wine for me. I like it but I would prefer a bit more fruit to come through. It's also probably a function of being a bit young and will likely get better as the tannins more fully resolve.

Concentrated complex wine with all to go for. Still tannic and should get better with a couple of years in the cellar. Not as oaky as some of the earlier vintages.

Remarkable depth; from +125 year old vines. [Justerini's Spain/Italy wine tasting Sep 2, 2013, London].
