Community Tasting Notes (14) Avg Score: 89.3 points

  • Ripe dark red fruit, dried herbs and undergrowth, licorice, some earth and slight VA on the southern nose. The full-bodied palate brings in mostly resolved but still noticeable tannins, medium acidity as well as a slight hint of animality. Long finish tapering towards balsamico and leather. Ripe and southern, but with a backbone. Despite the age, the ripe fruit is still very intact and firm, with some funky elemenents adding a layer of complexity. This might be in its peak now, but will probably keep further still.

  • 14,5% alcohol.

Somewhat pale and translucent cherry red color with a rather noticeably matured, tawny hue. Sweet and somewhat developed nose with complex and attractive aromas of earth, ripe plummy fruit, some leather, a little bit of licorice, a hint of raisin, and a lifted touch of sweet VA. The wine is remarkably full-bodied, dense and surprisingly youthful on the palate with flavors of developed, wizened dark fruit, prunes, some funky VA character, a little bit of leather, a hint of wild animal character and a hint of raisin. Despite showing some tertiary characteristics, the wine is still remarkably youthful on the palate. The structure is getting pretty round and mellow with medium acidity and quite ample, but already somewhat resolved tannins. The finish is rich and characterful with complex, developed and quite persistent flavors of raisins, prunes, some funky barnyard and animal character, a little bit of lifted and slightly wild VA sweetness and a hint of tannic grip.

A wonderful, classic and beautifully matured Gauby with somewhat noticeable yet perfectly proportionate funky wildness to complement the fruit. The structure is getting pretty smooth, mellow and round, but the fruit department is still surprisingly youthful, taking into account the nigh-20 years of age of the wine. It might be that the structure will give in sooner than the fruit reaches the full tertiary maturity, so I'd say the wine is either near its plateau of maturity or already on it. Drinks very nicely right now, but will also keep for years. A classically beautiful and sophisticated Roussillon red, great value at 25€.

  • A pleasant surprise, this was still drinking. A call-back to old-style Gauby, this weighs in at 14.5%, but actually carries it well. Fruit is still there, some cherry, licorice and a touch of yeast. Well done. Drink now.

  • The alcohol and tannins seem to overwhelm the fruit at this point. Will let my other bottle sleep and see if anything changes.
