Sampled on two occasions at the the producer, today a newly opened and 1 day old bottle. Similarly impressed on each occasion. The nose is rich and smoky, light in color. The palate is mostly old world style with delicious but restrained fruit, balanced acidity, slight spiciness and occasional hint of oak. Moderately long finish. After a day it lost a bit of fruit but gained measurable complexity. I was stunned that pinot this good is made in Germany. I would take this over the vast majority of burgs and american pinot in the $60 price range. The vintage is special; tried another year that did not impress. Not sure how this will age, I will probably drink most all of it in the next 2-3 years and save 1 bottle back.

A seductive palate offering red fruit, chocolate and lots of spice. Evident oak but well blended in. Dry on palate with medium - ripe and velvet tannins. Medium+ alcohol is balanced by refreshing acidity. Enjoy over the next 4-6 years.

Bitterschokolade, Walnuss, geräucherter Speck, rote Beeren, etwas Tabak; am Gaumen mittlere Statur, gut unterlegte Säure, feine Bitternote, feine Tannine, eher hintergründig; frischer, leicht bitterer Abgang; spannend und lecker

Lunch by Patrick Kimpel * with "Die besten deutschen Spätburgunder" (Rheingau Gourmet & Wine Festival Hattenheim, Germany): Nice sweet fruit, a bit lactic, hint of vanilla from the oak, good freshness, needs a bit more time to integrate the oak, charming but lacks some structure and length.
