  • A single vineyard Montsant made with Syrah (50%), Garnacha (30%) and Carignan (20%), aged for 12 months in French and American oak (50% new, 50% once used).

Dark, slightly translucent cherry color. The nose is robust, opulent and almost alive - it seems to change every time you sniff the wine, from fruity aromas of blackcurrants and sunny dark fruits to more spicy tones of pepper, anise and licorice; from elegant, leathery notes to more rough and rustic hints of earth and and dust. The wine is dry, very robust and full-bodied in the mouth with complex, intense flavors of plummy fruit, fresh, brambly blackberries, pepper-driven spice, some obvious vanilla notes of American oak, a little licorice and savory hints of wood. The palate is fruit-forward, but not so much about ripeness and opulence than about structure, freshness and savory notes. The wine is medium in acidity, but the fine tannins are firm and ample. The finish is long and quite grippy with quite prominent tannic structure and dry flavors of brambly dark berries, some bitter chokeberry, a little sweet, aromatic oak and a hint of peppery spice.

This is good and balanced stuff with nice concentration without any feel of overripeness or overextraction. The tannins are still quite youthful and rough and the oak influence is still quite dominant, so this is more about the wine's cellaring potential than immediate enjoyment. Even though the structure is wonderfully balanced, the overall picture is still trying to fit pieces together, so I can imagine the wine will be much more harmonious after 3-4 years. Overall the wine will probably keep for a few decades, so no hurry with this one. Shows a lot more promise than many Priorat wines at double the price. Recommended.
