  • JP Mathieu bottling. Sadly very, very corked.

  • Roumier obviously killed it in this vintage and this is the best vintage of his Charmes I’ve ever tasted. Fully integrated with great depth of dark cherry fruit and and a perfect silky texture. The finish is so finely complex with notes of red flowers, dark spices and crunchy minerals. Just so well done with plenty of life ahead.

  • On a night of special wines, this shone through, losing in the end only to a superb bottle of '96 Leflaive Chevalier. Based on notes, I decided not to decant and opened only shortly before pouring into Riedel vinum burgundy stems. A jaw dropping array of armoas hit my nose right away, bringing to mind all those overused metaphors like "peacock's tail" and "stained glass window," but really it was all those things. A bury-you-nose-in-it wine, supremely burgundy and utterly charming, though with great depth and power. This needed no time at all to get going on either the nose or the palate. The core was deep ruby red with no bricking at the edge, quite clear and clean throughout. Fruit aromas were dark and rich, both red and black elements, some saucy sexy notes, quite R rated, really, pheremonal and slightly animal. All that said, there was real elegance here, too, and a very precise structure. We drank it over the course of about 90 minutes, during which time it changed not at all - not that it needed to! I was quite amazed at how open for business this '99 was, and I have trouble seeing how it could get very much better than it was this night. Perhaps a little softer texture and a touch more depth to the finish over the next couple of years? We'll see. No hesitation at all to drink it now, though. I could still call the taste to mind the next morning.

  • '99 Red Burgundy Tasting: Supremely balanced between ripe fruit, deep earth, and exotic spice. Soft tannin, great vibrancy. This was the most ready to drink '99 today -- enjoy now and over the next 5 years at least. Really tough to keep hands off this glass, what a delight.

  • Try to drink this within the first half hour that its opened, and you will enjoy one of the great burgundies ever; swirl it and let it sit for ten minutes, then drink up and enjoy, perhaps with roast squab, or elk tenderloin. For that first half hour, this had a goose bump inducing balance of barnyard sauvage and earthy ripe black fruit. A powerful 90 second finish. This is earthy, primal, feral, politically incorrect sex in the glass. After 30 minutes or so, the fruit was not as expressive, the barnyard too prominent. So this may be drying out a bit, but if you time this right, you'll enjoy a peak burgundy experience!
