  • Mellow. A perfect blend, not too many tannins, not too acidic, and subtle berry tones.

  • Noticeably light in colour, this is quite thin and insubstantial. However it's still fresh, serviceable and drinking quite nicely on its own as well as with chicken & mushroom paté. Obvious merlot on the nose, a little spice. It's just watery and light on the palate. However the acidity is attractive.
This is a good wine for basic drinking, which is reflected in the price. It's never going to a mini Cru Bourgeois, but it's not trying to be - it's just easy drinking. It also shows the 2008 vintage can be quite fresh and attractive once the bitterness has subsided. In fact, this is surprisingly fresh for 5 years of age and considering it has sat through two summers at ambient temperature in the spare room of a London flat...
With medium-well rump steak, one hour decant): this is smooth, fragrant and surprisingly good. Reminds me that despite the fact some call them 'weedy', a 'classic' Bordeaux with food is a match made in heaven - even at £7. So, so much better than the New World.
With cheddar cheese: not quite as good as with steak but similar to or better than on it's own. Some lovely merlot spice now but a stalky greenness too, a touch of heat that wasn't there with the steak. Still a little thin in terms of mouth-feel but for the price, this is great value.
With brillat-savarin cheese: this should be a challenging match but the wine stands up to it although it's quite subdued. No tannin clash (as there is no tannin left in the wine) and acidity probably helps too.
