Community Tasting Notes (2)

  • Nose: Spirity, rather floral (rose and orange blossom), light and small fruit, more grape, and yellow-light orange fruits (apricot, tangerine, etc). Also some spicy, peppery honey and some almond.

Palate: Light honey, mildly viscous. There's an alcoholic punch in the transition to the mid-palate. Honey, apricot, tangerine, and a small amount of grape juice. Pinch of walnut essence. It's not terribly complex or deep, but pretty straightforward.

Finish: Only a very small amount of wood (like a 4th fill or older), and a bitter note, akin to a banana peel without the actual banana flavor. Some more dry nuts in the very rear, but I didn't notice that much of a pronounced finish. B-/B (probably more on the B-)

I really wanted to love this. I've tried it three times this week at different times to see whether I was just missing something. I reviewed it a long time ago elsewhere and really loved it, but I might have been charmed by the magical 1979 and grading it based on what it could/would turn out to be (potential) rather than what it is/was. I picked out most the same aromas and flavors this time around, but it just didn't go anywhere. It didn't have the depth or richness that I might have expected. It's good, but it needs more time. It's extremely young and needs more time in barrel, I think, to gain more "more." Everything about it seemed very much on the 'young eau de vie' rather than 'young armagnac.'

  • Aged 17 years, 48.9%. color: burnt gold. nose: very powerful and seductive yellow raisin, honey, nectar, marzipan, marshmallow, banana, fresh cream pie. palate: initial entry is smooth, followed by a good attack with very light tannins. in addition to yellow fruit and some honey, there is a more pronounced floral quality as well as dry nuts. finish: very long, full of fruit and some sweet, brown spice. Aside from the 1979 from the same estate, the aromas are the most outstanding of any Armagnac. Lighter/yellow fruits with the younger age, though still racy, muscular, and intoxicating. I only wish that Armagnacs from this estate were easier to locate.
