  • smooth - not like a traditional Barolo. Nose cigar box. Drink well now

  • Piedmont 2013, Day 2 - Visit to Barale Fratelli / Lunch at Locanda in Cannubi (Barolo, Piedmont, Italy): Pretty good - this was my favourite of the wines at the tasting; I actually preferred it to the rather too big, too bold 2009 single cru Castellero in style. The nose was quite typical of what we had before - some funky, barnyardy notes, meat and a drift of smoky tar accents floating across sweet blackberry aromas. The palate was surprisingly bright, open and very generous given the rather stubborn rusticity in the Castellero. While this was a sizeable, substantial wine in any sense, with rich black fruit on a little savoury backdrop, all this was nicely integrated with firm tannins and wonderfully juicy acidity. While not as massive and brooding as the former wine, I liked the fact that this had a nice fresh feel to it, especially as it tapered off into a surprisingly light-footed, more elegant finish with a linger of earth, a tiny bit of spice and a floral kiss. More balanced and drinkable I thought, and while not a great wine, it was pretty good. This will drink well younger, perhaps between 8-10 years from now, but will also age well beyond that.
