Community Tasting Notes (5) Median Score: 90 points

  • Well developed nose, with decomposing fruits, forest floor, rusty minerals and salty liquorice Fresh, mid-weight, spicy and well structured on the palate, without being too tannic. Long, reverberating finish - spicy and mineral. The drinkability of a maturing beaujolais. Extremely enjoyable (91-92)

  • The first night, I enjoyed it for its freshness, fruit, and polish. By the second night, it had developed a lot of complexity (more so than the basic BF I've had from Schiefer which is very good but doesn't have this extra level), and was a pleasure simply to smell and savor the aroma (and ultimately to drink). A compelling mid-weight wine, and, while not a bargain, I found it worth every penny. If you put this in front of someone who had never had BF but enjoys, say, young Chinon, Ribeiro Sacra, or Beaujolais, I feel certain you'd have a convert.

  • Friday Night Blind Tasting (Weygandt Wines - Washington, D.C.): Bright red color in the glass, just vibrant and clear. Aromas of sour cherry and hemp. It seriously smells like cranberries wrapped in dried seaweed. The palate is really silky and juicy, with ripe brambly fruit, solid acid, and a kick of tannins. Tasted blind, I was all over the map. It wasn't dark and dense enough to be new world, but it was very unique for an old world wine. I was thrilled to see it was an Uew Schiefer. I've loved his blaufrankisch before, and this one was just exceptional.
