  • (Not a) birthday dinner (Hinsdale, IL): You know what's crazy? This bottle was actually better than the last one that I had. So... what does that say about scoring? Sweeter than I remembered it would be, with far more freshness and lift than that previous bottle. Oily, rich, and again incredibly textural (especially in the context of CSH typically being a fully dry wine), this has that added layer of depth thanks to the botrytis and late harvest, but still retains that classic CSH minerality and cut. A splendid wine and one of the best rieslings made in my lifetime.

  • Opened at Caprice in HK for the Jean Trimbach x Egon Muller Celebration Dinner by the winemakers themselves. Slow-oxed since 3pm and poured at around 11pm.

This was absolutely wonderful! Amazing Clos Ste Hune late harvest with a story to go with it. Apparently made from grapes from VVs which are usually harvested separately, and though the Trimbachs originally considered blending Jean said that the wine just 'didn't quite come together' and 'wasn't better than if separate' - hence the creation of the 'Hors Choix' cuvee from those old vine gapes.

Sweet, but not too much - somewhere between a Spatlese and an Auslese. However, still very fresh, bright and lively, some stone fruit and white flowers coming through. Very enjoyable and still performing excellently at this age.

A rare wine and a real treat. Would love to try again if I ever have the opportunity to!

  • Beautiful petrol nose. The sweetness is fleeting but the power and depth of fruit is astonishing. Still plenty of freshness and none of the cloyingly sugar characteristics. Easy drinker!

  • Best riesling I have had. Real depth, complexity, and with ever-growing intensity that puts ultimate peak in question. Abundant botrytis and csh dryness in perfect harmony. Vendange Tardive is bestowed upon extraordinary fruits, and this special bottling of Hors Choix was simply jaw-dropping.

  • Wow. Hors Choix! That says it all. Coming from the most prized Alsace wine, this rarity is simply the best Alsace wine I've ever tasted. Stone fruit, spice, with notes of green apple, it develops more honey and candied fruit notes with air.
Sugar, acidity, fruit all come together, without one element ever taking over, to give a sense of balance and plenitude. This is a full wine which finishes extremely long and everything, from the simple yet unique label to the restrained opulence, indicate that this noble wine is one of France's greatest.
It's hard not to imagine how much longer this wine could age and I'm incredibly lucky to have been offered to taste it.
