Approaching 20 years, and still young as a foal! The color is deep ruby, almost black at the core, and with only a hint of aging at the rim. Directly after poured and decanted, the nose was dominated by black berries and licorice. After an hour or so in the glass, a more mature and earthy profile emerges: tobacco, rotten leaves and wet earth. Everything is underlined by fruit - more like black cherries - and spices (licorice, vanilla). An iron streak adds complexity. Medium to full bodied attack, fine but quite dry tannins on the mid palate, very good acidity giving a very fresh impression. And then the fruit kicks in: black cherries combined with blackberries. As the wine evolves in the mouth tone of licorice, vanilla and dry wood tones complement the fruit. Long and fresh aftertaste with lots of fruit almost going in a more red fruit direction (raspberries). Fascinating wine. Reminiscent of a good Barolo, and better than most of those. Still young, will benefit from further aging for those wanting even more tertiary tones. For everybody else: just enjoy this treasure.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acid and good supporting tannins. The feel is lacking slightly on mid-palate with red fruits, cherries, spices, and herbs with a touch of earth and floral notes on the back end.
Overall: This was blind in a setting with a slew of 99 Brunellos. It wasn't really a fair setting and this didn't hold as strong as it did within its own peers back in September.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium+ acidity and chewy tannins. The structure is very youthful with violets, incense, crushed rocks, dark red cherries, and licorice.
Overall: The nose was very open while it was showing some very youthful structure.

Chicago Italian Lovers round 9- 99 Brunellos for the first anniversary of the group (Vinci, Chicago): Nose: Well balanced with red fruits, cherries, mint, spices, berries, and herbs. There is nice depth, but the nose isn't as expressive as the non-blind Brunellos.
Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acid and good supporting tannins. The feel is lacking slightly on mid-palate with red fruits, cherries, spices, and herbs with a touch of earth and floral notes on the back end.

Chicago Italian Lovers round 5- Taurasis (Caro Mio, Chicago IL): Nose: The nose is very perfumed with violets, minerals, crushed rocks, dark red cherries, and licorice. There is very good depth to this with a sense of style as well.
