  • The aroma is fairly subtle. I have opened some bottles that can be instantly smelt throughout the room, but getting anything out of this wine requires sticking your nose right in the glass. The smells are mostly cherries with … believe it or not … a little bit of blueberries.

Moving on to tasting, the Baron Henri leads off with black cherries, follows up with spices and oak, and finishes off with bitter dark chocolate. The aftertaste is dominated by the chocolate, making me wish for some kind of tasty chocolate accessory.

There are no noticeable tannins in the wine, but there is a bit of acidity, most prominent on the finish. It all balanced out very well though.

I decanted the wine - it was really on a whim; I think decanters are cool and I just wanted to play. It turns out, however, that it was the right thing to do. I ended up leaving the wine in the decanter for about an hour before coming back to it after my initial taste, and that hour made a quite a difference. The wine opened up very nicely, making all of the flavors seem much more pronounced. I would definitely recommend decanting this one.

I paired the wine with lamb kabobs, by the way, and it went extremely well.

Honestly, this wine is not excellent, but it is better than just “not bad.” For only $14 a bottle I would not mind having a few on hand, but I will not go out of my way to find them either.
