  • 2008 Barolo&Barbaresco Check-in (Osteria Langhe, Chicago IL): Nose: There was a bit of a funk at first, but it seemed more like a bit of reduction with air along with some toasty oak, red cherries, raspberries, violets, roses, tar, and some roasted herbs.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with high acidity and high tannins. The tannins are on the youthful, but silky side with the acidity having real punch to it. The feel is well balanced and shows a slight sleekness with red cherries, raspberries, violets, tar, and roasted herbs.

Overall: This is certainly on the youthful side, but, it starts to really open up with air. This shows off a nuanced-quality, but with a slight sleekness too.

  • 2008 Piedmont at Osteria Langhe (Chicago, IL): There was a little stink here at first, making some of us wonder if this was corked. It wasn't. I think that smell is some mixture of toasty oak and reduction. The palate is certainly better than the nose here. Despite the oak on the nose, there isn't too much polish, and fruit here shows as a nice mix of red and black. Good acidity as well. The only modernist hints show up in the tannins, which feel a little glossier than nebbiolo has any business being.

  • Intoxicating nose.
    Dried fruit, raisin, prune.
Well integrated on the palate but still quite youthful.
A bit of the 14.5% pokes out but this is still great.

  • Nose: At first, this showed a slight bit of oak, but as that pulled back it revealed a pretty side with red cherries, cranberries, licorice, herbs, rose petals, and leather notes.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium/high acidity and medium/high tannins. There is clear youth to the structure along with red cherries, cranberries, herbs, rose petals, and a touch of leather.

Overall: This needed a good amount of air to really come into form. With air, it took on a more feminine and cool style while also having a freshness to the tones.

  • Gorgeous color. Screams Italy. Brick red. Lovely nose of spicy strawberries, red road tar, touches of red rock and minerals.
Strawberry compote, charred caramelized fruit but still touches of rusticity. Burnt cinnamon. So much balance. Palate is clean and very pure without strong tannins. Lots of great acidity coupled with nice fruit and spice. Medium bodied - great mouth feel. Overall fantastic and tasty. Great wine especially for the price.
