  • A Tasting of 1964 Gran Reserva Rioja and Even Older White Rioja! (Los Gatos, California): Light ruby center with fading rim. Wow aromatics here-incredible sweet fruit and warm spice that are very forthcoming. Discrete natural sweetness of fruit, high acidity, and a stalky, dry, tannic finish. Too bad that the palate did not live up to the tremendous promise of the nose, but this was still very good for a wine of almost 60 years of age. On the downward path though unless I have misread its ability to resolve the tannins over time.

  • Ordered at Casa Mono, NYC. The cork was saturated and nearly black at the end, but it came out cleanly. In the glass, surprisingly youthful crimson at the core, shading to amber/orange at the rim. On the nose, an earthy and almost CdP-like funky note, paired with violets and leather. On the palate, light and smooth, with cherries, orange peel, tea leaves, dust, and decaying soil, leading into a somewhat one-dimensional finish - the part of the wine that left me wanting more. The tannins are silky and fine, but this still tastes young; I think there is still positive evolution ahead.

  • 52 years old and drinking like a youngster. Gorgeous translucent red hue with no evidence of browning. Vibrant and complex with a soft and elegant finish. A fantastic wine!
