Pristine bottle, perfect level and cork. Completely mature appearance; rich and aromatic nose, slate and forest floor, beef stew and warm spices; the balanced and structured palate has lost a lot of weight and flesh, but it is still harmonious; slightly drying and tannic finish, good resonance and length. Objectively past its peak, but showing very well with Elizabeth’s famous courgette pasta.

Pristine bottle purchased in Bad Neuenahr in 2005, perfect level and cork, 12 months on oak, 14.5% ABV. When I last tasted this in 2009, the vintage reined supreme over the terroir, but since then the balance of power has been restored. Mature but lively appearance; the nose is displays subtle and complex aromatics, with dried (but not roasted) red berries, undergrowth, tobacco, baked apple, spices and smoke; on the palate the wine has lost a lot of its weight, but the alcohol and the tannins are still well integrated and there is a lovely freshness too; light finish with lovely nuance, no black tea yet, very good length. Showing well in full maturity, drink now - 2020.

Quite big with its 14.5%, not unlike a Côte de Beaune Premier Cru, fresh mushrooms and forest floor; fruit, rich and deep, good length but the vintage dominates over the terroir (no noticeable slate character).

Über dem Peak aber noch gut zu trinken. Keine Frucht. Schwarzrot. Kein Braunton. Kompott und Gewürze.
