Tobacco and iron-rich soil jump at corkpull - dark ambering ruby in this specimen plucked off a retail shelf a few days ago so provenance unknown but there appears to be no drastic issue at hand though cellared at 55 would I am certain it would be less advanced in its additional profile of decaying cherry fruitedness. The beauty of this wine’s regal origins is neither fully expressed or diminished - a tweener - concentration of goodness might be an issue even in those with pristine provenance.

Blood red; vivacious, tapenade & black pepper, later meaty; vibrant red fruits, refreshing acidity, sleek, mid weight; sinewy finish, very long. Bags of time left.

Bromley Wine Circle does Northern Rhone - 2nd November 2023 (Beckenham): Coal dust, desiccated prune, olive brine on the nose. Really love this. With some air these aromas are complemented by steak tartare (complete with the cornichons and a just a hint of sweet vinegar) some ground pepper spice too. Palate has further spicy notes and some gorgeous plum fruit.

Been a bit since I tried this and it still needs more time. That said I didn't give it much air time. It is still very primary with lots of ripe black fruits, and still a whiff of oak; this is followed by violet and game, olive and smoke; it continued to expand throughout the time we had it. The palate is well balanced, but also still feels very young. I would have guessed this as a '15 or later blind. Very good, but I'll try to wait at least 3-4 more years.

(Domaine Jean-Louis Chave St. Joseph) Very dark purple red violet color; focused, unusual, instant coffee, Postum nose; tart black fruit, tar, black pepper, tart berry palate with medium acidity; medium-plus finish (tasted blind in a group of Syrahs from around the world, and verified with samples from more than one bottle; very disappointing showing for this top Northern Rhone producer; 13.5% alcohol) 88+ points
