Drinking this a little late comparative to recommendations but believe it to be just fine. Good solid nose of earth and dark berries. Palate of raising, plum, dark berries, little earthiness. Acid moderate with a medium finish. Still tasty!

With the regular Catena Malbec from the same vintage already open, and this its cheaper cousin not getting any younger, I decided to uncork, er, unscrew it for side-by-side comparison. An bottle I had opened a year or so ago was unimpressive, with very primary, grapey flavors, but to my surprise this has improved a bit since then, about 5 points worth in my book. Not much of a nose to speak of (some roasted fruit and balsamic notes), but on the palate the wine is soft and lush and easy enough to drink, with notes of strawberries and cherries. The aromas and flavors tend to suggest that the winemakers turned the dial up to 11 on the grapes, and the wine has no complexity to speak of. But then, at this price, why should it? At least it avoids the worst sins of its price-range peers (no excess R/S (3.5g/L), no hi-toast coconut-choco-milkshake flavors, etc) while delivering solid fruit with moderately balancing acidity. For a large social event or an economy class libation, one could do a lot worse.

The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like molasses, stoniness, nutmeg, light toast, plum, cherry, prune and blackberry. It tastes like black currant (cassis), pomegranate, light toast and molasses. The body is medium/full. The wine has satin-like texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has low acidity.
