  • In the absence of a suitable VDN or port, this was pressed into dessert wine service for which it was unsuited, being insufficiently sweet and too light bodied. However I could sense elegance, minerality and lively acidity and may get a better impression when I drink up the remainder of the bottle.

Retasted on 8/15/2018 with goat cheeses, a suitable pairing, I radically revise my rating. No sweeter than demi-sec but a beautiful example of Loire basin Chenin showing wax and quince notes and excellent balance between gentle sweetness, mineral infused acidity and underlying roundness. Very good.

  • A lovely nose. Nice and fresh with sort of green apricots, pine nuts and lanolin. Very strange in the mouth: there's a lot of acidity and it's oddly unsweet. There's a sort of rich raisiny feel, but it's actually quite dry. Very strange.

  • Although this is definitely mature, I wonder if it would have picked up weight in the middle with another 5 years. Very nice nose of wool, beeswax, and orange peel, hints of baking spice underneath it all - allspice? clove? the palate is very complex, with bitter minerals, clementine, wax, and a lingering citrus peel quinine aroma in the mouth, very persistent. Excellent wine. If the acidity were a bit more prominent to cut through the sweet, this would really be outstanding.
