Community Tasting Notes (1) Avg Score: 90 points

  • The first vintage of Ch. Sociando Mallet as we know it today. As a long time admirer of this estate, it was a thrill to open this wine, but my expectations were suitably marked down given 1970 is a notorious fair-weather friend. Pure garnet. Cooled fruited with piped tobacco, cedar, cigar box, medium bodied, nimble on its feet, fully resolved, old school claret austerity, which is one of the hallmarks of this vintage. A good half century knock. But if you hanker after a wine that shoots the lights out you should look elsewhere. (Those of you sitting on 1970 clarets for 50th birthday celebrations drink them this year. Good bottles like this one are a treat, but it is a variable vintage, and these wines will not repay further keeping.)
