  • If you are holding this wine now, better drink up. Hope it's not too late like the 2 bottles I have opened since June, 2016. Both were corked. Very disappointing considering the reputation of this producer.

  • We got this bottle form Fess’ wine club in June, 2012. This wine pours DARK (almost black) and has a rich, spicy, earthy bouquet. About 1.5 years ago, we took the same wine (different vintage) to Laughlin to spread my recently-deceased uncle’s ashes in the Colorado River; we ate at a nice steakhouse in Laughlin and the Rodney’s Vineyard Syrah was amazing (I think it was a 2007 vintage, but I’m not sure). Couldn’t wait to try this bottle…………
Sure enough, this is a very spicy Syrah, showing TONS of black pepper, savory herbs (rosemary and thyme especially), rich, creamy oak (but not too much), along with a mineral-infused earthiness. There’s also (obviously) dark fruit elements like plums, black cherries, and blackberries in the flavor profile. This is a beautifully well-balanced wine, despite its 14.9% alcohol level. There’s a perfect amount of acidity and tannins at the wine’s core, which should allow this wine to age/mature beautifully for another 10+ years. At five years post-harvest, it’s drinking very nicely right now.
If you like rich, creamy, spicy, fruity Santa Barbara-area Syrahs, this one’s tough to beat.

  • Worked well with roasted duck.

  • Medium bodied red. We sipped on its own. Would be better with food.
