Beautifully preserved and one of the better Barbarescos tasted this year. Deep garnet hazy colour, amber tinge. Medium+ intensity complex aroma of sezamy oil, olives, balzamique, tobacco, tar, dried tomatoes, dried cherries, black tea, roasted plums, coffee. Medium body, incredible structure of this 52 year old Nebbiolo, saline leather, earth and bret scented dry morelo cherry flavours, hints of smoky roasted plums and oriental spices, high piercing acidity in sync with extra fine grippy tannins.

Served non-blind. This was a quintessential aged nebbiolo bouquet, complex with menthol, tar, roses, bright cherries, some medicinal notes, black tea. The palate was so silky and smooth, yet it still retained an edge of structure and brightness. This had a depth of fruit that wholly belied its almost 45 years. So, so good. This seemed like a perfectly stored bottle, with an ideal color and bottle fill. My WOTN.

Old Nebbiolo at Tolani (Upper West Side, NYC): Medium garnet color, cloudy. Nose of sweet tobacco and spice with some orange peel. Full on the palate, high acidity, a bit clipped on the finish. Probably seen better days but very pleasant.

Old Nebbiolo at Tolani (Upper West Side, NYC): On the nose, gravel and soil notes lead to dried strawberry, tobacco and undergrowth. On the palate, an initial burst of acidity attacked the senses, giving this 40 year old Barbaresco lift and vibrancy as fading dark fruits and minerals caressed the senses. The finish showed eucalyptus and spice. I don’t see this wine getting any better, but it’s still highly enjoyable.
