  • NobleRottersSydney - 1996 night (360 Bar & Dining, Sydney): {cork, 13.1%} {Graeme} A prefect cork (double-decanted off moderate sediment 3 hours earlier) reveals a garnet-looking wine, with aged aromas of mint, spearmint and pine needles. There’s a skerrick of curranty cabernet fruit, but this tastes like it could have some malbec in it too, with its minty freshness of dark green (but ripe) flavours. It’s still quite fresh, with fine dusty tannins, plenty of flavour on the mid-palate, medium weight and a medium/long dry finish. No hurry to drink this, but you need to be sympathetic to that mint.

  • A little swampy and volatile. In a dumb stage with jubey fruit and chewy tannins.

  • NobleRottersSydney - Langtons Classification (Alio's, Surry Hills): [cork, 13.1%] The first wine of the night that’s really looked its age, with a tell-tale brick tinge around the rim. Trademark Wendouree mintiness is well in evidence; it’s more spearmint than eucalypt, and has a nicely formed halo of development about it, but if you’re allergic to these most characteristic Australian traits then it’s not for you. It tastes a lot younger than it looks, with plenty of fine tannins in evidence, other structural elements hidden by the dark-hued fruits, and an evenness to the length that is its best quality. Not much true secondary development yet on the palate, although I suspect its true peak might be a fairly short one, and rather hard to find, especially in view of the colour. Certainly an interesting wine, and very different to anything else on offer tonight.
