Medium yellow. Very fresh. Good acidity. Some petrol, yellow flowers, spices, minerals and stones. Very nicely held together with good tension and energy.

Nice, mature nose of petrol, lemon, peach, honey, apricot, and minerals. Good acidity on the palate with more lemon notes, a bit more honey, and peach, but overall quite fresh fruit flavors. Long finish. Lovely wine that needed a bit of air to wake up and was drinking really well right now.

Double decanted at 5, drank over 90 minutes or so at 7. Lovely stone fruits o the nose - apricots. Some flowers too. But the nose is not well articulated, nor is it bright and focused. The wine is a bit flat, seems like its best days happened already. Drink up.

Maybe this is just a bad bottle. Very disappointed. Nose was classic mountain flower and honeysuckle but very muted. Started off bitter and improved a little after an hour of air. A little quinine flavor and a little mineral. Hollow and thin. Just not a great wine.

(Nikolaihof Riesling Steiner Hund "Reserve") ($77.00) This vineyard is existentially unique, as if it had its own magnetic fields. Druids would have built their megaliths there. Maybe at night a UFO lands silently and all the little space dudes get out and do some magic, I don’t know. But I know of no other great wine that seems so unknowable, overwhelming and haunting. For a Nikolaihof ‘08 this is markedly ripe (13%), and it shows a lot of counterpoint between its druidic exotics and Chartreuse-y herbalness, versus its jasmine and white chocolate yang side. Potentially great, it’s still busy working through its contradictions. The implosion of minerality may eventually mediate among them. A superb and complicated Riesling. + +

Golden color. Good minerality and freshness. Apricot, mango, some petrol. Complex and nuanced. Just a tad sweeter than dry. Drink now.
