  • Kombucha, rhubarb that's been left out in the sun, sour milk, Gatorade, green bananas, onion juice...
    Oh, and it is carbonated.
I gave a glass to my sister in law, who was a FC novice; she politely said that she has preferred every other glass of wine I have given her over the last two decades. Yeah the Susucaru is not for the unprepared and one definitely has to be in the mood. While I have still have a stockpile of FC reds, I will probably take a few years break from the Susucaru. The novelty of these is wearing off and now I just worry about getting C diff. or something.

  • These wines are definitely consistent in their inconsistency. I looked up a note I had on a Susucaru 3 from several years and this is pretty much the same thing. A wild ride....

My first Susucaru. OK, yea, well, definitely this was pretty much what I was expecting. The number and sorts of adjectives flung around the table with this one was amazing. There is Bing cherries, bubblegum, garrigue, sweaty socks, rotting flowers, lamb vindaloo, red vines, tortilla chips, chewable children's aspirin, and something oddly chemical that may or may not be a neurotoxin. In any case, a very unique experience that was tons of fun on a beautiful evening on the patio with Persian food. It is true that this wine evolves remarkably over 1-2 hours and just keeps morphing into something entirely new. This is for wine geeks only and anyone expecting a traditional rose will not like this at all. In fact, the only thing remotely rose about it is its beautiful but filthy salmon color. I can't even say it is more like a red wine or a white wine as there really is no reference point here. It is just a really strange and wonderful thing to drink. How one would know if this had gone off, I have no idea. I can't imagine anyone buying a case, or even half case, but it is definitely something to experience. I felt like I was jogging on the moon (on mushrooms). The whole thing seems a bit like a dream now.

  • Found this bottle buried deep in the pile. Not hoping for much, given the offputting character of a previous bottle. It didn't help that the wine poured into the glass with a cloudy brownish hue. Aromas sharp and surprisingly fresh, which got my attention. Actually drank very well, despite its age. Instructive and nearly enjoyable.

  • This is the first time I've been disappointed by Frank. Am so glad that my first bottle wasn't like this, as the love affair would have been aborted before it began. This was drinkable, but uninteresting -- a really nasty funk took a while to blow off, and when it did there wasn't much left. It kind of tasted like a watered down shrub -- a slightly sweet vinegar cocktail.

Had been trying to recreate the magic of pairing this with our favorite Korean experimentalist, Fusebox, only the lightning couldn't be put back in the bottle this time.

For those of you who got a bad bottle on your first try, all I can say is that it's worth trying again -- when they're great they're like nothing else.
