Ran out of Port tonight and found this in the back of my cellar where is sat dutifully for the past 15 years. Not much experience with these types of wines but found it to be a nice sweet dessert. Deep gold color in the glass. Dried sweet apricots, very syrupy.

Rich, sweet and creamy, this was a no holds barred Sauternes, but it still somehow seemed balanced. Quite complex too, and should last a while yet (A).

2003 was deemed a good quality vintage in Sauternes and this Coutet 2003 echoed that. I have always been a fan of Coutet. A few years back I tasted the 2015 d'Yquem and Coutet next to each other, and yes d'Yquem was a notch up but not as big as I was expecting. The Coutet was just that good, and d'Yquem was insane. Fast forward and this 2003 showed wonderful notes of apricots, peaches, orange peel, wild honey, spice and saffron. The palate was wonderfully balanced with notes of very ripe stone fruits, apricot pastry, sweet spices, vanilla. This is layered, with a slightly creamy texture and very focused with a lingering spicy finish. A wonderful 2003 Barsac. This is entering its drinking window yet will drink well over the next 15+ years

3rd of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level, as July's bottles, the extra weight of fruit in 03 coupled with natural Barsac zest really works with this wine. VF (18.5).

(COUTET) Coutet SPECIAL Dear Friends, Once in a while you need a good bottle of Sauternes or Barsac for a dessert opportunity or for that moment when the foie gras arrives and you want to do the goose justice. Here’s your wine at a very special price for a 750ml. While not the most complex beverage (it’s not 2001 Yquem), that’s not the point. It fills a much needed void - a well-priced bottle of Sauternes/Barsac that you won’t feel guilty about opening. It’s sort of a crack and pour affordable dessert wine that delivers a lot of punch for a small price. A perfect size for a dinner party and most that try it will be bowled over by its texture and honey-bucket personality. This is the type of high-end Barsac they serve in France at some of the best restaurants as it can be enjoyed now or put aside for a decade or more - a steal on a deal and a wine that many of you will be very happy to have in your cellar: ” ONE SHIPMENT ONLY at this price with perfect provenance directly from Bordeaux 2003 Chateau Coutet (Barsac) 750ml (WA92 or 93?)
