Fruit-shy and aromatically reserved at first, savoury/peppery/earthy character reminds me more of Syrah. Really blooms with air, taking on leafy/floral notes with red berry fruit – the richness and sweetness of the fruit hinting at the solar vintage. Not lacking in acidity though. Even better on day two with lovely floral/berry patch/turned-over soil aromatics wafting everywhere. A superb effort.

Very impressive Chambertin 2003 from Camille Giroud, with all you would ask for in a grand cru: deep, aromatic complexity, flavor substance, uniqueness and character. Showing a bit of it's vintage ripeness and missing that vibrant lift. Still a very nice bottle!

Dinner at Lucky House Cantonese Private Kitchen (Upper East Coast Road): Very nice. This was classic Chambertin, with the 2003 barely showing. The nose had notes of dark cherries, earth, meat, mineral and just a bit of spice swirling around in a masculine bouquet. There was admirable clarity on the palate for a 2003, with detailed dark cherry flavours layered with gentle bits of earth, meat and a bit of spice and mineral. The hot vintage showed just a bit in the powdery tannins, but otherwise this had a fine balance and lovely integrated feel, all this leading into a nicely meaty and mineral finish. Lovely stuff, drinking well now.

Festival of Alex - Vintners Dinner: Bind. Earthy and measty, plum and plenty of spice. A decent amount of age showing through with plenty of rich fruit as well. Has a background of spice with mid length.

ChrisD's 40th: Vanilla, meaty, some blueberry and garrigue. Quite high in acid for the vintage, this has good length and texture. Just a little bit outclassed among the other Burgundy tonight, but a really nice wine.
