  • Late maturity. Vivid aromas, cherry and sweet peppers. Quite dry on the palate, with bright acidity. Herbal and dried fruit. Still very enjoyable but on the decline.

  • Something not quite right about this wine. A touch of pyrazine that doesn't fit with the rest of the profile, perhaps?

  • Savory and mature, with bright licorice notes, rich cherry liqueur, a hint of green pepper, lush texture. In a perfect place right now, and it ought to keep at this peak for years.

  • Medium dark red. Cassis, olives, herbs and cedar box along with some earthy blue fruit. Delicious Cabernet flavours and a finish while tannic has a high level of terminal acidity.

  • Normally this is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (30%) and Aglianico (10%), but I don't know whether the proportions are different this year or not. Fermented and macerated for three weeks in stainless steel. Aged for 12-14 months in new French barriques. Alcohol 12,8%, acidity 5 g/l, pH 3,5.

Developed, somewhat translucent and moderately mahogany-hued cherry red color. The nose feels pretty dry and even somewhat mute with quite subtle flavors of licorice, some wizened dark fruits, a little bit of brambly blackberries and a hint of smoke. That typical almost-Bordeaux nose typical of Montevetrano is nowhere to be seen. The wine is dry, spicy and savory on the palate, yet pretty obviously ripe with some sense of concentration and quite intense flavors of wizened dark berries, even slightly pruney dark fruit, a little bit of gamey umami character, a little bit of juicy blackcurrant, a hint of sour cherry bitterness and a touch of savory wood spice. The acidity feels pretty well-balanced and the ample tannins start to be quite resolved and mellow, contributing to the texture of the wine, but not really to the structure. The finish is rich, long and savory with a lightest grip of tannins and dry flavors of peppery spice, dried dark berries, some meaty gamey tones and a hint of earth and stony minerality.

A beautiful, mature Montevetrano that is either very close to its apogee or on its plateau of maturity already. Although the nose feels quite underwhelming, even nondescript, the wine is very lovely and really complex on the palate with stunning power and depth without any sense of polished, overripe modern fruit or excessive new oak - both characteristics more typical of young Montevetrano. Apparently these wines lose their obviously modern qualities at 20 years of age and start to show beautifully as harmonious, balanced and fully mature wines. This is a very lovely vintage that is drinking beautifully now and will keep for some years more - although I doubt there will be any noticeable development.
