  • A second label wine from a weak vintage, so expectations were not high. But this really delivered nicely. Popped and poured. The nose was not too striking, but this was notable for very exuberant dark fruit flavors that were still extremely lively. Do not consider this a 90+ wine because it didn't have the complexity or secondary flavors that i would expect from a top cabernet. But this paired very nicely with a grilled sirloin and the dark fruits were very juicy. Now I wish I had bought more than one bottle of this. Had a bottle of this a few years back and it was much better now with the bottle aging to smooth it out.

We also had some of a 2007 Chappellet Mountain Cuvee with this meal (after the Decoy). By comparison, the Chappellet had red fruit flavors (raspberry) that were a bit lighter in intensity, and it really made the rich dark fruit of the Decoy more impressive.

  • Soft, low acidity style. Some chocolate on the palate to go with the plum and blackberry flavors.

  • Decanted for an hour & as it opened it expressed all the qualities of it's bigger brother.
No formal notes taken since it was NYE, however, it compared well to the '99 Napa Silver Oak, but at 1/3rd the price.

  • The 2003 Decoy is a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Cabernet Franc. It is tooth stainingly tannic at this point and really needs some time to settle down. Once it does, there is a nice mix of complex fruits and dark cherries mixed with a light dashing of toasted oak on the finish. Good stuff but not very approachable just yet.
