  • The Vin Rouge is very dark in the glass with great legs running down the side. There's a big raspberry and blackberry punch on the first whiff. Great blended berries in the palate are put together really nicely and smoothly. 2011 was a famously tough growing year in Virginia, so it is a tribute to the wonderfully talented winemaker to have produced such a wine with such depth that year. It's drinking very nicely, actually we think we're drinking it at the perfect point in its life. The aftertaste is wonderful, without any trace of a tannic bite. Try drinking with lamb.

  • A few years seem to have benefited this wine! The nose is dark and leafy with a nice spice note (barrels?). The wine drinks dark, herbally, leafy, with more barrel notes providing nice texture and spicy contrasts to the leafiness. Good rich body with a sense of balance.

  • Nice dark burgundy color. First whiff not too assertive, likewise the initial taste. But as Jeff and company explained at the tasting, this was a tough year and this wine is meant to be drunk now (as aging won't really do much to it). A pleasant red to enjoy on a summer evening.

  • Unassertive nose of blackberry, raspberry, and earth. Gentle acidic attack; mid-palate opens to bright fruit culminating in moderately spicy finish with a nip of tannin. 50% cabernet sauvignon, 36% petite verdot, 14% merlot. $32 off the list at Wine & Duck, Front Royal, VA.
