  • Still a long way ahead of it, bright appearance, full intensity on the nose, smells like Port with dark fruit and sweet spice. Very subtle tannins, ripe and smooth.

  • A field blend wine made from grapes sourced from an old, abandoned vineyard interplanted with some 20+ autochtonous varieties.

Very dense and fully opaque black-red color. Very open, expressive and sweet-toned nose with intense aromas of plummy dark fruits, perfumed floral tones, some sweet ripe dark berries, a little bit of licorice, light tapenade tones, a hint of vanilla and a touch of savory wood. Lots of everything here, but nothing in excess - overall the nose feels complex and pretty attractive. The wine is massively powerful, very full-bodied and quite extracted on the palate with ripe, sweet-toned and juicy flavors of plummy dark fruit, ripe blackberries, some bittersweet dark chocolate, a little bit of blueberry, light cherry marmalade tones, a hint of savory oak spice and a touch of olive. Overall the wine feels surprisingly balanced for its size, thanks to the moderately high acidity and ample yet very ripe and more textural than aggressively grippy tannins. The sweet-toned finish is very juicy and powerful with intense and persistent flavors of plummy dark fruits, brambly blackberries, some ripe boysenberries, a little bit of savory oak spice, light vanilla tones and a hint of chocolatey oak.

A very ripe, sweet-toned and immensely concentrated Douro red that is more about lush, fruit-forward character than very extracted and grippy structure. Usually these massively big Douro reds are very forbidding with their massive tannins in their first 10-15 years, but this wine offers the perfumed, floral and vibrant Douro fruit but still is surprisingly harmonious and enjoyable already. All in all a very pleasant, rich and vibrant red that is drinking beautifully already, but might continue to develop further (hopefully integrating the oak better with the fruit in time) for another 5-10 years. I prefer the less sweet and more structure-driven style of Douro reds, but this is still remarkably enjoyable example of the style nonetheless.
