Double decanted six hours before. You know, I just had a great glass of the ‘98 Conterno Cascina Francia and this wine is not that far behind. While the Conterno is more red fruit dominant, this is a mix of red and black fruit. Hard to pick a favorite.

This is fresher on the nose than the '98 Conterno I just tried, with some pretty clear tar notes behind the fruit.
More a mixture of black & red fruit on the palate than the red-fruited Conterno. This was also popped & poured, and now with some air, the red fruits are coming to the fore. This is drinking younger than the Conterno today, although the Conterno displays a little more nuance.

il gran finale del Barolo di compleanno (Osteria Langhe, Chicago IL): The nose is open and balanced with velvety tones of red cherries, raspberries, strawberries, licorice, tar, roasted herbs, tobacco, and some earth notes. There is good depth as well right now with everything working together in harmony. The Medium/full bodied feel is balanced and polished with tart, high acidity and silky, high tannins. This is drinking perfectly right now. It does lack another gear compared to the big hitters in the lineup, but it's a lovely and mature Barolo that is a real joy to drink.

A running stream of water. Pure, precise and feathery. Pale tawny. Pronounced. High & fine tannins. High acidity. Rose, dried herbs, mint, cedar, clove and cinammon. Dried orange, cherry and raspberry, leather, tobacco, earth, forest floor. Long & complex. Outstanding.
