Friday (Chicago, IL): No. 12458. Outstanding stuff with a relatively rustic edge. The vintage has given this lightness and lift, and there's good elegance here with the red fruits and focus on acidity. On the palate though, there's more of a mix of red and black fruit, and a fairly grippy tannic structure that tells you that this still has plenty more aging potential. Nevertheless, quite delicious now, and it never really tightened up or shut down over the course of the evening.

I was really rather sozzled by the time this came my way on what was what you might call a night of "extreme guzzling" but I do retain a good memory of this distinctive, powerful, truly singing wine. Like most great Nebbiolo, 15 years of age is only the beginning of its ageing journey: past the first flush of youth (invariably too tannic and abrasive for me), this is the start of its complex and long-lasting middle age. From magnum, this was the marginally better of the two Barbarescos on show tonight. Big aromas of crushed violets, roses and moist pipe tobacco. Nervy acidity, real tension and strength in the structure, and the early stages of softening in the tannins. Chewy, heady, lofty, fragrant, this is a super wine and shouldn't find any Barolos intimidating at this price point or even higher - it's just bloody marvellous.

Dark red with slight orange tints. Slow o'd for about 6+h. Nose shows dried red cherries and dried red florals, lifted pine/mint, spice and iron. Palate reveals more sour and less sweet crushed cherries, spice, very good acidity and some grippy but fine tannins that make their presence felt late. This will only get better from here.

Translucent ruby red, hints of tobacco and mint (and a bit of heat as well—it is 14.5%). Medium-bodied and chewy. Easier earlier on; the alcohol becomes more pronounced with air. More side-to-side on the palate than front to back.

Reticent nose shows dark fruit, smoke, a hint of oak, and noticeable traces of youth. Dark and touch indistinct. Right on entry, a bit tight, excellent balance that it medium bodied, tight, but vibrant and pleasurable. Flavors are dark, earthy, mineral laden with slight hints of torrefaction. Wow, the balance is terrific, not the most expressive moment with this but all it needs is a bit of time.
