  • This was really such a nice little serendipitous wine find. We first had this on the tasting menu at a wine bar in Santa Cruz named Vino Cruz, which by the way I heartily recommend to you as a friendly place that take on the laudable effort to specialize in the wines of Santa Cruz Mountains, many of which are small and unheralded producers not well known away from the area. This was one of them.

Cutting to the chase, this is an Orange Wine, and a darn fine one. It's the Pinot Gris grape, but fermented on the skins for 19 days, which gives it a pinkish orange tint. It is both fruity and floral, but quite different than anything else. I've had some orange wines I liked, and some I didn't enjoy at all, but this one probably gave me more of a happy smile than others. Strawberries, orange peel, peach, toast, red plum skins, who knows what else with a rich mouthfeel. I brought a bottle back to the other side of the country, and we made a grilled peach, goat cheese, and arugula salad specially to go with it.
